Biking and such
I got into a conversation with another cyclist while waiting for the train from Palo Alto. I wanted to know where to get the nifty destination tags that everyone puts on their bikes to make loading them on the train easier. We fell to chatting, and I had what I think will be a typical California conversation about my commuter. "I like you fenders," he says. I thank him. "Do you mind the weight?" he then asks me. Translation: It never rains here: what's up with those?"They're hardly the largest thing on this bike," I say. "Yeah, I'd noticed that it looks kind of...formidable," he says. Translation: That's the heaviest bike on the God-damned platform."Well, this was my year-round commuter before I moved." "Oh? Where'd you move from?" "Boston." "Boston! Wow! I couldn't imagine biking year-round in Boston," he says. "Yeah, it isn't for everyone," I say. Translation: That is because you are weak and have soft skin....and so on. Despite The Girl's and my acumen for picking good places to live, we've arranged yet again to have a commute that's mostly flat but with a brutal hill climb at the end. For reference, my Boston commute from MIT (4.5 miles): You can see the undulations of Massachusetts Avenue near the start as it goes over the Charles and again over I-90, as well as some mild hills down through Roxbury. What stands out, though, is the ascent right at the end near our house, where you climb sixty vertical feet in very little time. By comparison, my (potential) commute from the 4th & King Caltrain Station, which I rode today (4 miles): This one climbs 140 vertical feet in the last mile (basically, 26th Street west of Treat) with two nasty humps between Guerrero and Dolores and between Church and Sanchez. Notice that the vertical scale has changed, such that the last hump is nearly twice as tall as the final climb back in Boston. That last one forces me down into my granny gear in front; those two together produce 90 percent of the sweat on the trip. They're doable, though. I've done them twice, once carrying many, many pounds of groceries and again carrying a laptop and many books. Given the otherwise ridiculously nice character of San Francisco's roads (even Harrison and Bryant by the overpass seem roomy and civilized compared to Boston), this commute should be a breeze. There is however something wrong with my rear derailer; I'm sure of it now. I think that it was already worn and a little bent, and the bike's being crammed into a moving van may have pushed it over the edge. That's going to need fixing stat. |

Note to Future Leighton: This is What We Did
I'm updating my Broken and Hearted Podcast more, because I have the Gear: This episode deals with my gear and the gear used to make you a slave in the modern world... or just music. Recorded the truck, a truckstop and its sounds. Talked about the gear we use to move stuff, eat food, make music. Featured: My Kenworth, a 50’s Martin acoustic, CBs, de-beaking machines. More music and a good microphone this time, so it’s longer. Boxcar Satan, Rare: X, Keelhaul, Wino, Sonic Youth, Rush, Bowie, Devo+ I am driving a metric shit ton lately, so I guess I can afford more gear. But I am never home to enjoy non-trucking gear. I did get a bike stolen, then I destroyed the next bike within a week. I broke a gear. This is good for my cars though. Neither have working AC, which doesn't really matter in Michigan, at least to a pseudo-Southerner. Can afford the V8 for the Fiero, but will have zero time to install it in the back. Had a surprise birthday party thrown for me. Just glad I didn't come home naked, like I usually do. Band hasn't practiced since the tour, but that gave me time to write and record three new songs about killing Billy Joel. One might be in 5/4. We do have a show soon, and I hope we get in a fistfight with another band playing. You know the band. We play really well angry. We are the world's angriest party band. |

The Republic of Molossia
You guys. You guys. Oh my god. My long-time readers may remember, back in 2005 (when I was a widdle baby college freshman), I posted about the hilarious and distinguished micronation of Molossia. Amanda discovered the website, and we spent hours pouring over it, laughing and making plans for our own micronation, right there in our dorm room. I remember being impressed by the thoroughness of the site, amused by the quirky eccentricity of the President, and generally excited about the idea of making your own country. Last night, I was sitting at my computer when an email popped into my inbox. I opened it. And blinked. And blinked again. Subject: An Invitation
Greetings.
Some four-plus years ago, you (at least I think it was you) commented very favorably regarding the Republic of Molossia on your blog. I don’t know how I missed it all these years, but I just noticed the entry this evening. I truly appreciate your kind words. Thus, I would like to invite you to come and visit our nation, located some four hours east of San Francisco, over here within the wilds of Nevada. I will gladly escort you around Molossia and show you the sights; it would be an honor.
If you are so inclined, let me know when you might wish to visit – I recommend September, as July and August can be a bit warm. I hope you will favorably consider my invitation and come see our great nation!
Warmest regards, His Excellency President Kevin Baugh, Republic of Molossia I blinked again. And then I started shrieking. "Oh. My god. Oh. My god." I tried calling Amanda, but it was late on the East Coast and she was already asleep, so I called Katie, and we squealed about it for a bit. I'm currently composing a response. Of course I'm going. It's so close, and so awesome. How could I say no? Current Mood: awake |

Birthday
I never did post about my birthday. It was perfect. Lovely and low key. Slept in late, stayed in bed with the boy until 2pm, ate insanely decadent and piping hot Cheese Board pizza for lunch, went and saw Up!, and then met Frances, Jonathan, and Emily for a late dinner at Zachary's. I had been trying to plan something bigger and more exciting, but in retrospect, it was about as perfect as it could have been. Last year, I set some personal goals at my birthday dinner. 1. Get some poetry published - legit, paid-for-it, in-a-magazine published. 2. Get properly settled into my new city Apartment, job, dog. Done. 3. Be more fiscally responsible (open up an ING Direct account for savings, etc.) Savings account/nest egg growing as we speak. 4. Possibly meet someone There's a boy / his name is Paul / he's cute and sweet / and very tall. And I'm making progress re: the publishing - submitting things every few weeks. So... new goals for this year! 1.) Study for the GREs and do well 2.) Get into graduate school 3.) Continue writing and the quest for publication 4.) Continue to save teh monies 6.) Exercise more Woo-hoo! Current Mood: awake |
